Sort of. 
They're corrupted file packets. Programs that were anything from a virtual bush to an NPC, that AL was able to implant disruptive code into. They're easy to make because they have one core task (spread and replicate) and AL doesnt have to control them. So kinda like digital herpes. Slightly more aggressive though.
